Prescribed Fire Senior Project (NR4470)
This course is a targeted study of prescribed fire concepts and practice & provides students with hands-on learning opportunities designed to prepare them for application of prescribed fire. We evaluate the benefits and uses on prescribed fire in California. Then, students will work through the steps in prescribed burn planning, including mapping, permitting, unit preparation, monitoring, and burn implementation.

Forest and Fire Ecology (NR3305)
Ecology is the scientific study of relationships between organisms and their environment, interactions among organisms, and the cycling of material and energy through ecosystems. This course takes a holistic approach, integrating ecosystem ecology, plant physiology, and fire science to build a comprehensive understanding of how forests respond to disturbance.

Wildland Fire Management (NR 3340)
Wildfire is both a fundamental ecological process and one of the most pressing challenges facing communities today. The same fires that shape and sustain ecosystems can also destroy homes, take lives, and strain agencies tasked with responding to them. Making sense of this duality draws on a wide range of disciplines, including ecology, fire behavior science, public policy, incident operations, and planning, which all shape how we manage fire before, during, and after it burns.
This course focuses on wildland fire management across the full fire cycle. We will examine how landscapes and communities prepare for fire, how incident leadership make decisions during an active fire, and how landscapes and communities recover after fire.

Wildland Fire Control (NR 2204)
This course covers fundamental fire control techniques used on various wildland fuels. We overview concepts on fire physics, fuels, weather, topography, fire behavior, and tactics. Fire suppression techniques, procedures, and safety instruction for hose operations, fire line construction, mop-up, and fire organization (ICS).
